June 2008
The
pedal is on the floor and the hands are at 10 and
2. We're wearing out the tread on the tires and the strings on
the
instruments! June's tour is compact in time and
extensive in
reach. In about 2 weeks, the band will have traveled 5268
miles from
the hills of Carolina to the Rocky Mtn State of CO, back east to
Virginia (in
ASHLAND on THURS), up to NY (FRI), on to Ontario, back south to PA, and
then
home! And you know what, we're loving every minute, every mile,
every
note, and every cup of coffee!
On
Thursday (June 12) the band will be picking at Ashland
Coffee and Tea, a great listening room in Ashland, VA.
Friday we'll be playing
for the first time at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY.
This looks to be another great listening room. So y'all please come out
and
join us. We love playing on any stage, but these types of rooms
make for
a special evening.
We
added some new pictures to our myspace page so hop on
over there and check them out.
Thanks for your
support. We couldn't do this with ya!
~~~~~~
The month of May has the band jotting up and down the
east coast from VA to MA, and then down to GA and over TN. We
recently added a stop at Creation Station in East Hampton, MA, and we
hope to add a few more to the tour, so stay tuned. On May 28, The
Biscuit Burners will perform live on the Blueplate Special on WDVX in
Knoxville, TN at Noon, EST. You can tune in online at www.wdvx.com. Later that evening,
the band will be performing at the legendary Station Inn in Nashville.
~~~~~~~
We hope your new year is off to a joyful start. We are
so pleased to announce that our new full length album, Take Me Home, is complete! Like our other
albums, there is no one way to sum this one up. We are inspired by
music from near and far, including Bluegrass,
Americana and Country as well as Indian
Ragas, Reggae, and Jazz. With an Appalachian voice, we
translate these inspirations into our Fiery
Mountain Music. And we feel that Take
Me Home is the finest representation to date of that Fiery Mountain sound. We are very excited about
how the project came together and can't wait to share the songs with
you!
.
.
The record will officially be released on March 13th and
you can pre-order the record now on-line, in order to have it in your
hand by that date. Our first show will be at the Grey Eagle Music Hall, at our hometown of
Asheville,NC. Also, that weekend we are happy to be trecking over
the mountain to play in Johnson City at The Down
Home and dropping into Chattanoogafor a show at the wonderful Barking Legs Theater. The end of the month will
have us playing around the southeast, including a spot at Woodsongs Radio Hour in Lexington, KY on March
31. April and May will have us out to the midwest and up
through the northeast as well as some more shows in the south, so check
our website for updates
.
We are really so honored to have such an amazing group
of friends and fans like yourselves that help keep us on the road. We
are proud to be an independent label, Indidog Records. Without the
connections and funding of major labels, we depend on folks like
yourselves even more. If you like the record, you can help us out a
ton. Please call your local radio stations and let them know you want
to hear Take Me Home over
the radio waves! Let your friends and family know about the music and
that it is most readily available on the web.
.
Hope to see you out this year! Also, check out our
tourdates and let folks know when we are heading through a venue near
them.
.
A lot of folks have been asking us for live music and
footage. If you have any video footage from last year or recordings,
please email them to promo@thebiscuitburners.com and we will make them available for everybody.
.
We will also be posting photos from fans on our site. So
if you have any you would like us to get up there with props to you as
the photographer, send them along as well!
.
Check out our dates below, and stay tuned to our website
for more news.

Howdy
Friends,
We hope you are doing well. We are excited to be back on the road
and playing a 5 night stand at Silver Dollar City in a few days.
We will be doing several sets a day, so if you happen to be at Silver
Dollar City, there will be plenty of time to catch some of our fiery
mtn music.
In
November we hit the road with a much more normal
touring schedule, with shows in NC, VA, TN and FL. We are really
excited to be kicking the month off with a hometown show at one of our
favorite venues, The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC. Later that
month, we play what seems like a home town gig, just a stone's throw
away in Johnson City, TN at the Down Home. We can't wait!
Check out our tourdates below for all of our show info. If you are interested in helping us spread the word
for this upcoming tour as a street team member, please drop me an
emai. We'd be most appreciative!
Billy
has a few special side project releases that are
out and available at our webstore that you should definitely check
out. I think we have mentioned to you the duet release with Billy
and Ivan Rosenberg. Billy and Ivan are both considered by
many across the country to be leading the charge of the next
generation resophonic players.

Their album, The Donkeys features them, as many would
expect, on the dobro, but it also sheds light to their skills on many
different instruments. In fact, it opens with a banjo duet!
Guest appearances on this album include Mary Lucey, Shannon Whitworth,
Darrell Muller, Jon Stickley, Dan Bletz, and many more.
Last week, banjo wiz, Ryan Cavanaugh also released his
new album, Songs for the New Frontier. This incredible
disc features Cardine on dobro, Danny Knicely on mandolin, John Garris
on guitar, Rex McGee on fiddle, and Darrell Muller on bass. Ryan
is an incredible banjo player, and he has been recognized world wide
for his 5 string prowess. He toured internationally alongside
Bill Evans'(Miles Davis,John
McLaughlin) band, Soulgrass.
Both
of these albums are on sale right now at www.thebiscuitburners.com.
Hop on over and get your copy today!
~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week at Bristol Rhythm and Roots, the band was joined
by the Governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine. With Kaine on
harmonica, the band played one "You're The One I Want."
~~~~~~~~~~~
This past cross country / international tour has been going
great. Running
up the CA coast was so refershing with great shows in Berkeley, Bishop,
and at Mtn Sage. Great time in Seattle with Uncle Earl, and
British Columbia has been great to us. We took part in some
wonderful workshops in Sorrento and Chilliwack was an exceptional
time. We are back in the states for Sisters Folk Fest in Sisters,
OR, and then we hightail it back to our home region for Bristol Rhythm
and Roots fest in Bristol, TN.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Billy Cardine and Ivan Rosenberg release The Donkeys.
This albums features two of today's cutting edge resophonic players,
with a side cast of players that include Darrell Muller of Old School
Freight Train, Dan Bletz, Mary Lucey, Shannon Whitworth, and Jon
Stickley. You can purchase this new release in our webstore.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Mary Lucey is featured in the August edition of Bluegrass Now!
The article titled "Biology, Biscuits, and Bear, Oh My!" highlights
Mary as one of the prominient female bass players touring
today.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The Biscuit Burners featured on The History Channel's,
Our
Generation, which is airing on Friday, August 24 at 6:30pm
est. The History Channel crew was in attendance at Bonnaroo, and
interviewed the band, as well as filmed aprt of their set.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The Band was featured in a Bonnaroo Review on USAToday.com
by writer, Ken Barnes...
"so we started to head that way, and in the Troo Music Lounge, caught
part of a set from a very cool band called The Biscuit Burners –
definitely need to grab their CDs this week and give a more careful
listen. Typically a band with a banjo, a guitar, a cello, a violin and
a dobro wouldn’t catch my attention, but these guys were really good.
Not to mention that the two young ladies in the band, Odessa Jorgensen
and Mary Lucey, provide the beauty to match the music."
~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey Everybody,
Wes just celebrated his 21st birthday up in
Boston and is enjoying his new access! Billy, Dan, Odessa, and I
are
watching the green creep up the mountains here in weaverville, and I
thought I would drop a line to wish to you all that your spring is
unfolding beautifully, too. Our days have been filled with
recording, working on our bus (odessa and I are in charge of building a
shower-yikes), and writing new tunes. oh yes, and then of course all
the lovely work that fills the day to the brim that allows us to stay
on the road. We had a blast at our favorite way to thaw out from
the winter down at Suwanee springfest and last weekend was great
playing to a sold out crowd at the station inn and then heading to
pituresque dahlonega, ga for the bear on the square festival. We
have been lucky to have our good friend, Jeffery Knorr coming out to
some of our shows to run the sound and to have hired a tour manager and
driver, Dave Keister. The dogs are loving the bus-maybe a little
too much, since we have to fight for couch space sometimes.
Odessa has adopted a beautiful border collie, which she named Birch
after our fun night at the Birchmere. We are excited to be
playing some of our favorite festivals this summer and sharing a lot of
our new music with old friends and fans across the country. hope to run
into you somewhere down the road! - Mary
~~~~~~~~~~~
We are so thrilled to announce that
we've been added to Bonnaroo, one
of the largest festivals in the U.S. With a line-up that contains
such acts as The Police, Widespread Panic, Ben Harper, Gillian Welch,
and 80 more acts, this should be one heck of a weekend. We look
forward to seeing some familiar faces as well as meeting some new ones
in Manchester, TN.
~~~~~~~~~~~
We
are absolutely thrilled to be featured in the new Bluegrass
Unlimited magazine, April 07 issue. The article features
each
member and
highlights the band's career this far. Jerry Douglas is quoted in the
article as saying "Billy is fluent in everything I (J. Douglas) do, and
Josh Graves, and everybody that has come before." The magazine is on
the news stands now, so get a copy today! The band is also featured in
the new WNC
Magazine, with a
picture of Ms. Odessa Jorgensen on the
cover. Interviews and photo were taken from their performance at the
Down Home, back in January.
This
summer is shaping up with some great festivals with Rockygrass, Grey
Fox Festival, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, and the Sister's Folk
Festival. Look for this list to have additions so stay tuned. The band
is also teaching at some great camps this summer so if possible join us
there as well.
~~~~~~~~~~
The
Biscuit Burners are proud to announce the addition of Odessa Jorgensen
(fiddle and vocals) and Wes Corbett (banjo) to the band, joining Mary
Lucey (bass and vocals), Billy Cardine (dobro and vocals), and Dan
Bletz (guitar). Both highly skilled musicians, Odessa and Wes bring
immense talent and a fresh perspective to a band that is already known
for their innovative instrumentation, resplendent harmonies, and
captivating original material.
Odessa
Jorgensen (vocals/fiddle) hails from Northern California and now
hangs her hat in Nashville, TN. Odessa began playing violin at age 4
and has been heavily involved in the classical music community.
She has played with the Santa Rosa symphony and made her debut at
Carnegie Hall at the age of 13 with the Young Peoples Chamber
Orchestra. Over the last few years, Odessa has shifted her focus
to bluegrass and old-time fiddle. Since having moved to Nashville she
has been welcomed by the local music community not only for her amazing
ear for harmony and melody on her instrument, but also for her heart
warming vocals and unique but familiar songwriting style.
Though
only 21 years old, Wes Corbett has already performed with
ground-breaking bands such as Crooked Still and The David Grisman
Quintet, and in 2006 he toured with Tristan and Tashina Clarridge, Old
School Freight Train's Nate Leath, and hammered dulcimer virtuoso Simon
Crisman in the band New Old Stock. Wes is fast becoming known as one of
the most innovative banjo players and composers in bluegrass and new
acoustic music, and we can't wait to see what he comes up with for The
Biscuit Burners.
We wanted to let ya'll know Shannon
and
John are both doing well. They are exploring some new
endeavors. We wish them the best of luck and happiness in all
their pursuits! Keep up with them on MySpace at:

The
Biscuit
Burners on PBS' Roadtrip Nation (7/06)
Two tracks of The Biscuit Burners'
A Mountain Apart were recently selected to be used on the soundtrack of
the next season of PBS' hit
show, Roadtrip Nation. The season begins on
September 1, 2006 at 9:30 on PBS stations nationwide.
Roadtrip Nation was started when
some recent college grads, who had no
idea what they wanted to do with their lives, decided to take a
roadtrip to figure it out. They bought an old run-down 31-foot RV,
painted it neon green, and hit the road for 3 months and 17,000 miles
to explore how other individuals found their roads in life. Along the
way, they interviewed over 80 people, including: a Lobsterman in Maine,
the scientist who decoded the Human Genome, the Director of Saturday
Night Live, the stylist for Madonna, and Starbucks Chairman Howard
Schultz. All of the leaders shared where they were in their twenties,
and how they resisted pressures of conformity to find their roads in
life. Today Roadtrip Nation has ignited a movement on campuses across
the country, where students hit the road in several RTN green RVs to
interview their own list of leaders from across the country. These
roadtrip experiences are shared through an annual public television
series, publications, and online at www.roadtripnation.com

Edgar Meyer in New York City. This week long workshop will be from May

classical and American roots music?will work with 15 young musicians in
a workshop designed to create a bridge between the two traditions.
Throughout the weeklong workshop, the musicians will immerse themselves
in improvised and composed music, compositions by Meyer himself and
student-submitted works. The week long experience will culminate in
performance at Zankel Hall in the renowned Carnegie Hall on May 21.
~~~~~~~~~~
Some
New Projects on the Horizon:
For 5 days in November and another
5 in January, The Biscuit Burners wrote, arranged and recorded the bulk
of a new project with their dear friend and oh so tasteful drummer,
Ethan Bauley. He and Billy were in a jazz trio back in Charlottesville,
Va. Ethan has since been getting his masters out at Calarts in Los
Angeles. ?We are all super excited about the project. So much of it was
created in a spontaneous and inspired setting and I think it comes
across pretty effectively. It was also fun to work with different
rhythms and space. It really allowed us to spread out a bit,? says Mrs.
Mary Lucey. Billy played both electric Sheerhorn Dobro, as well as
premiered his Weisenborn. Jon Stickley played some electric guitar as
well as acoustic mandolin. Dan and Mary both remained on their acoustic
instruments. Mary and Shannon lead the vocals. There are 3 covers and
the rest is new original material. A proposed title for this side
project has been ?The Biscuit Burners, Plugged?, following the 90?s fad
of unplugged records.
On the acoustic side of things, the
band has already begun writing new material for the next acoustic
album, so look for that hopefully towards the end of the year. This
will be their first acoustic album as a five piece and is sure to be
the best yet.
shown to a potential international audience of 100 million viewers in
early January. On Jan 29, the band performed at NPR's Mountain Stage.
Other acts performing were Shawn Camp, Rhonda Vincent, Alicia Nugent,
and Jon Randall. Look for it to be aired nation wide in late March /
