June 2008

The pedal is on the floor and the hands are at 10 and 2.  We're wearing out the tread on the tires and the strings on the instruments!  June's tour  is compact in time and extensive in reach.  In about 2 weeks, the band will have traveled 5268 miles from the hills of Carolina to the Rocky Mtn State of CO, back east to Virginia (in ASHLAND on THURS), up to NY (FRI), on to Ontario, back south to PA, and then home!  And you know what, we're loving every minute, every mile, every note, and every cup of coffee!

On Thursday (June 12) the band will be picking at Ashland Coffee and Tea, a great listening room in Ashland, VA.  Friday we'll be playing for the first time at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY.  This looks to be another great listening room. So y'all please come out and join us.  We love playing on any stage, but these types of rooms make for a special evening.

We added some new pictures to our myspace page so hop on over there and check them out.

Thanks for your support.  We couldn't do this with ya!

~~~~~~
The month of May has the band jotting up and down the east coast from VA to MA, and then down to GA and over TN.  We recently added a stop at Creation Station in East Hampton, MA, and we hope to add a few more to the tour, so stay tuned.  On May 28, The Biscuit Burners will perform live on the Blueplate Special on WDVX in Knoxville, TN at Noon, EST.  You can tune in online at www.wdvx.com.  Later that evening, the band will be performing at the legendary Station Inn in Nashville.
~~~~~~~

We hope your new year is off to a joyful start. We are so pleased to announce that our new full length album, Take Me Home, is complete! Like our other albums, there is no one way to sum this one up. We are inspired by music from near and far, including Bluegrass, Americana and Country as well as Indian Ragas, Reggae, and Jazz. With an Appalachian voice, we translate these inspirations into our Fiery Mountain Music. And we feel that Take Me Home is the finest representation to date of that Fiery Mountain sound. We are very excited about how the project came together and can't wait to share the songs with you!

Their album, The Donkeys features them, as many would expect, on the dobro, but it also sheds light to their skills on many different instruments.  In fact, it opens with a banjo duet!  Guest appearances on this album include Mary Lucey, Shannon Whitworth, Darrell Muller, Jon Stickley, Dan Bletz, and many more.

The Biscuit Burners featured on The History Channel's, Our Generation, which is airing on Friday, August 24 at 6:30pm est.  The History Channel crew was in attendance at Bonnaroo, and interviewed the band, as well as filmed aprt of their set.

~~~~~~~~~~~
The Band was featured in a Bonnaroo Review on USAToday.com by writer,  Ken Barnes...
"so we started to head that way, and in the Troo Music Lounge, caught part of a set from a very cool band called The Biscuit Burners – definitely need to grab their CDs this week and give a more careful listen. Typically a band with a banjo, a guitar, a cello, a violin and a dobro wouldn’t catch my attention, but these guys were really good. Not to mention that the two young ladies in the band, Odessa Jorgensen and Mary Lucey, provide the beauty to match the music."
~~~~~~~~~~~

Hey Everybody,

Wes just celebrated his 21st birthday up in Boston and is enjoying his new access!  Billy, Dan, Odessa, and I are watching the green creep up the mountains here in weaverville, and I thought I would drop a line to wish to you all that your spring is unfolding beautifully, too.  Our days have been filled with recording, working on our bus (odessa and I are in charge of building a shower-yikes), and writing new tunes. oh yes, and then of course all the lovely work that fills the day to the brim that allows us to stay on the road.  We had a blast at our favorite way to thaw out from the winter down at Suwanee springfest and last weekend was great playing to a sold out crowd at the station inn and then heading to pituresque dahlonega, ga for the bear on the square festival.  We have been lucky to have our good friend, Jeffery Knorr coming out to some of our shows to run the sound and to have hired a tour manager and driver, Dave Keister.  The dogs are loving the bus-maybe a little too much, since we have to fight for couch space sometimes.  Odessa has adopted a beautiful border collie, which she named Birch after our fun night at the Birchmere.  We are excited to be playing some of our favorite festivals this summer and sharing a lot of our new music with old friends and fans across the country. hope to run into you somewhere down the road! - Mary

~~~~~~~~~~~
We are so thrilled to announce that we've been added to Bonnaroo, one of the largest festivals in the U.S.  With a line-up that contains such acts as The Police, Widespread Panic, Ben Harper, Gillian Welch, and 80 more acts, this should be one heck of a weekend.  We look forward to seeing some familiar faces as well as meeting some new ones in Manchester, TN.
~~~~~~~~~~~

      We are absolutely thrilled to be featured in the new Bluegrass Unlimited magazine, April 07 issue. The article features each member and highlights the band's career this far. Jerry Douglas is quoted in the article as saying "Billy is fluent in everything I (J. Douglas) do, and Josh Graves, and everybody that has come before." The magazine is on the news stands now, so get a copy today! The band is also featured in the new WNC Magazine, with a picture of Ms. Odessa Jorgensen on the cover. Interviews and photo were taken from their performance at the Down Home, back in January.

      This summer is shaping up with some great festivals with Rockygrass, Grey Fox Festival, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, and the Sister's Folk Festival. Look for this list to have additions so stay tuned. The band is also teaching at some great camps this summer so if possible join us there as well.

~~~~~~~~~~
      The Biscuit Burners are proud to announce the addition of Odessa Jorgensen (fiddle and vocals) and Wes Corbett (banjo) to the band, joining Mary Lucey (bass and vocals), Billy Cardine (dobro and vocals), and Dan Bletz (guitar). Both highly skilled musicians, Odessa and Wes bring immense talent and a fresh perspective to a band that is already known for their innovative instrumentation, resplendent harmonies, and captivating original material.
      Odessa Jorgensen (vocals/fiddle) hails from Northern California and now hangs her hat in Nashville, TN. Odessa began playing violin at age 4 and has been heavily involved in the classical music community.  She has played with the Santa Rosa symphony and made her debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 13 with the Young Peoples Chamber Orchestra.  Over the last few years, Odessa has shifted her focus to bluegrass and old-time fiddle. Since having moved to Nashville she has been welcomed by the local music community not only for her amazing ear for harmony and melody on her instrument, but also for her heart warming vocals and unique but familiar songwriting style.
      Though only 21 years old, Wes Corbett has already performed with ground-breaking bands such as Crooked Still and The David Grisman Quintet, and in 2006 he toured with Tristan and Tashina Clarridge, Old School Freight Train's Nate Leath, and hammered dulcimer virtuoso Simon Crisman in the band New Old Stock. Wes is fast becoming known as one of the most innovative banjo players and composers in bluegrass and new acoustic music, and we can't wait to see what he comes up with for The Biscuit Burners.
We wanted to let ya'll know Shannon and John are both doing well.  They are exploring some new endeavors.  We wish them the best of luck and happiness in all their pursuits!  Keep up with them on MySpace at:
The Biscuit Burners on PBS' Roadtrip Nation (7/06)
      Two tracks of The Biscuit Burners' A Mountain Apart were recently selected to be used on the soundtrack of the next season of PBS' hit show, Roadtrip Nation. The season begins on September 1, 2006 at 9:30 on PBS stations nationwide.
Roadtrip Nation was started when some recent college grads, who had no idea what they wanted to do with their lives, decided to take a roadtrip to figure it out. They bought an old run-down 31-foot RV, painted it neon green, and hit the road for 3 months and 17,000 miles to explore how other individuals found their roads in life. Along the way, they interviewed over 80 people, including: a Lobsterman in Maine, the scientist who decoded the Human Genome, the Director of Saturday Night Live, the stylist for Madonna, and Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz. All of the leaders shared where they were in their twenties, and how they resisted pressures of conformity to find their roads in life. Today Roadtrip Nation has ignited a movement on campuses across the country, where students hit the road in several RTN green RVs to interview their own list of leaders from across the country. These roadtrip experiences are shared through an annual public television series, publications, and online at www.roadtripnation.com
Some New Projects on the Horizon:
      For 5 days in November and another 5 in January, The Biscuit Burners wrote, arranged and recorded the bulk of a new project with their dear friend and oh so tasteful drummer, Ethan Bauley. He and Billy were in a jazz trio back in Charlottesville, Va. Ethan has since been getting his masters out at Calarts in Los Angeles. ?We are all super excited about the project. So much of it was created in a spontaneous and inspired setting and I think it comes across pretty effectively. It was also fun to work with different rhythms and space. It really allowed us to spread out a bit,? says Mrs. Mary Lucey. Billy played both electric Sheerhorn Dobro, as well as premiered his Weisenborn. Jon Stickley played some electric guitar as well as acoustic mandolin. Dan and Mary both remained on their acoustic instruments. Mary and Shannon lead the vocals. There are 3 covers and the rest is new original material. A proposed title for this side project has been ?The Biscuit Burners, Plugged?, following the 90?s fad of unplugged records.
      On the acoustic side of things, the band has already begun writing new material for the next acoustic album, so look for that hopefully towards the end of the year. This will be their first acoustic album as a five piece and is sure to be the best yet.
