Organically Grown
Billy's Solo album
_______________________________________________
I made this record over the course
of the year 2000-2001. I had been playing music my whole life, but the
resophonic guitar for 2 years. At the time I was living in the
Shenandoah Valley of VA playing a lot of bluegrass and old-time music,
studying jazz with a brilliant trumpeter John D'Earth, and collecting
music from all over the world (as well as instruments when I found cool
ones). I had built a studio into my home in 1996, was on the road with
Larry Keel, and decided that it'd be fun to have a milestone of what I
was working on at the time, plus it'd help to have a little something
on the record table. The title Organically Grown #94060 came from the
rubber band that I was using at the time to help me hold on to the
slide. I always got the rubber band from broccoli, always bought
organic produce, and the plu for organic broccoli is 94060. I also
thought the title gave a nod to the spirit of the project, being that
it's a lot of original material, and was produced! in a very organic
way (philosophically, anyways). I built a solar panel powered laptop
recording system that fit in my hiking pack and used it quite a bit on
this project. Not for the main tracking, but for a lot of the mixing
and mastering, and for all of the graphic design. The packaging is also
on recycled paperboard and printed with soy-based inks. I hope you
enjoy this record. Though a lot has changed since then, I'm happy to
have a small piece of this time in my life preserved forever.

This record is a compilation
of tunes featuring the resonator guitar as played by all different
players. This album is the second one put out by the Resophonics
Anonymous crew, which consists of mostly West Coast dobro players, with
the exception of me (Billy). I wasn't on the first volume, but for the
second, my dobro pickin' buddy Ivan Rosenberg and I put together a cool
dobro duet. Uncle Josh Graves is featured on this recording as well as
some of the USA's and Canada's finest dobro players.
This track with Ivan and I is a little taste of the soon to come
recording featuring the two of us. Ivan and I both play dobros, as well
as clawhammer and 3 finger banjo, respectively. There are tracks with
each member of the Biscuit Burners, Darrell Muller from Old School
Freight Train, and swing pickin' buddy Dave Keenan.
